Potential of fine milk composition for cow udder health management

چکیده
The objective of this research was to investigate the potential of mid-infrared (MIR) analysis of milk to provide indicators of the udder health status of dairy cows. Mastitis data collected in 49 Walloon herds were merged with test-day data including milk composition and MIR spectra. A total of 1987 healthy lactation and 3204 lactations with at least one mastitis, clinical or sub-clinical, chronic or new infection, were identified. First, using paired t tests, significant differences between milk composition of the test-day from 10 to 45 days before the mastitis and milk composition of the test-day occurring during the mastitis (from 10 days before to 10 days after the event) were observed for fat, protein, casein, lactoferrin, saturated FA, short chain FA, medium chain FA, Na, Mg and K. Moreover, milk composition of testdays from healthy lactations was compared with milk composition of test-days occurring from 45 to 15 days before a mastitis using t tests. Lactoferrin, Na, titrable acidity, and urea were identified as potential early indicators of mastitis. The results emphasized the potential of MIR analysis of milk to provide udder health indicators.

Day-to-day variation in milk yield and milk composition at the udder-quarter level.
Automatic in-line measurement of milk composition and milk yield could be a useful tool in management of the dairy herd. Data on milk components and milk yield provide information on milk quality alterations and cow health status but are also useful in planning feeding and breeding. In automatic milking systems, udder quarters are milked individually, enabling analysis and recording at the udde...
متن کاملBovine Udder Quarter Milk in Relation to Somatic Cell Count Focus on Milk Composition and Processing Properties
The dairy industry requires raw milk of high quality in order to produce milk products of high quality and quantity. Mastitis is one of the most prevalent and economically important production diseases in dairy cattle. It causes increased somatic cell count (SCC), deteriorated milk composition and consequently altered processing properties of milk. Altered milk composition due to mastitis often...
متن کاملMonitoring udder health and milk quality using somatic cell counts.
In this article the use of somatic cell counts for monitoring udder health and milk quality is discussed. Somatic cell count dynamics at quarter, cow, herd and population level are discussed and illustrated with examples. Quarter and cow somatic cell counts directly represent the inflammatory status of the mammary gland. Herd and population somatic cell count are related to the inflammatory pro...

108 milk samples were collected to study the relationship of somatic cell counts (SCC) and milk composition with milking methods and udder hygiene from 27 Holstein Frisian (HF) dairy cows having moderate milk yield in mid-lactation and parity of 2 to 4, at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University Peshawar dairy farm. All animals were randomly distributed into three categories on the basis of ...
متن کاملEvaluation of quality changes in udder quarter milk from cows with low-to-moderate somatic cell counts.
Much emphasis has been put on evaluating alterations in milk composition caused by clinical and subclinical mastitis. However, little is known about changes in milk composition during subclinical mastitis in individual udder quarters with a low-to-moderate increase in milk somatic cell count (SCC). This information is needed to decide whether milk from individual udder quarters with a moderate-...
